Light Up Mermaid Box – A Lawn Fawn & Chibitronics Collaboration!

Hello crafty friends!

It’s collaboration week with us Chibi-gang, and I am so excited that we are pairing up my one of my most favourite stamp companies – Lawn Fawn! EEK! What a perfect partnership!

Over the next three days, Chibitronics and Lawn Fawn will be sharing some amazing projects, and I am kicking things off today along with Jessica Frost-Ballast and Kelly Griglione. I will link to their blogs at the bottom of this post so you can hop right over to see their projects too!

There is a $30 Lawn Fawn gift card and a Chibitronics starter kit (valued at $30) that will be given away randomly to two winners drawn from comments across all days and all blogs so the more you visit and comment, the better your chances to win!

To celebrate, I thought I would make an extra special project – so rather than sharing a card, I have this fun, illuminating underwater scene built within a 3D box! Take a look!

I admit, this is an intermediate /  advanced project – but the video tutorial walks you through exactly how to create the circuit using the Chibitronics LEDs & copper tape. The fact that you are dealing with a 3D shape is the trickiest bit – but with a little time & patience, it’s well worth while in the end! Let’s take a look at the box when it’s all lit up!

The Mermaid For You stamp and die set was perfect for making this project! I love how each of the elements work so well together to build a scene. I used my copic markers to colour in the images, but then used some distress ink blending to colour in the sea floor. To create the layers of dimension, I used the Lawn Fawn simple stitched hillside border dies.

By adding some acetate to each seabed panel, I was able to add to the 3D illusion. I love that the little fish, at first glance, look like they are floating – or rather ‘swimming’ along! (Just keep swimming….! ) 😀

For the circuit I used both a blue and a green LED. These do come in separate packs, but I couldn’t resist as I really wanted to create that underwater feel!

When you watch the video, you will see that I have added the switch to the handle section of the box – this way I can easily control when it is switched on and off. I die cut another handle piece from scratch cardstock so when I don’t want to have the lights on, I simply sandwich this between the two handles which have the copper tape.

My daughter is begging me to let her have this as a night light for her room – but I am not quite sure if I can part with it just now! 🙂

Thanks for stopping by, and be sure to watch the video to see the full instructions on how this project was made – including details on recreating the chibitronics circuit.

Don’t forget to hop on over to see the projects that both Jessica Frost-Ballast and Kelly Griglione are sharing today as part of this collaboration.

Also, the rest of the gang will have more projects over the course of the next few days – more details over on the Chibitronics blog, which will also link to each of the projects.

Don’t forget to leave a comment at the blogs in order to be in with a chance to win!

You can also visit the Lawn Fawn Blog to see some of the awesome projects made by their team – check it out here.

There is a $30 Lawn Fawn gift card and a Chibitronics starter kit (valued at $30) that will be given away randomly to two winners drawn from comments across all days and all blog,s so the more you visit and comment, the better your chances to win!

Happy Crafting

Lesley

The box is so cool! I think it’s amazing to give as a gift :)
The acetate is a great tip, to give the illusion they are floating 😮 and love that you made another box to explain us how to make the circuit <3

I love the concept of the chibitronics circuits as an addition to card making, its such an amazing thing to be able to incorporate this sort of stuff into home-made cards. The mermaid box is also genius, like your own portable fish tank! Thank you.
