Now over to todays project…

Yeti Christmas Shaker card-front

Just look at these cute little guys! Is it any wonder I couldn’t resist turning them into a Christmas card for my best friend Alexia. Truth be told, I had already sent her a card, but I loved the sentiment ‘To my Beastie’ that came in this fun Beast Friend stamp set from My Favorite Things.

%image_alt%

I had stamped and coloured these two little guys with copic markers whilst watching netflix one evening, and thought they would look great on a card – so I decided to make a shaker card.

To mix things up a bit, I decided to use a smaller rectangular die to cut three holes in the front panel of my card rather than just having one large aperture. I think it looks a bit like windows, don’t you? From there, the whole thing came together nicely – the yeti with the lights is decorating the house, but his friend would rather stay warm inside!

To create an outside scene, I used a selection of dies – mostly from Lawn Fawn, to build a beautiful snowy landscape. I even pulled out an old snowman wooden stamp from my stash to add to the garden. Thats the kind of things be(a)st friends get up to, isn’t it?- building snowmen!

I used distress inks to add colour to the landscape, and then assembled everything together and stuck a panel of acetate over the top. This is because there were so many die cut edges, I was convinced that the glitter would get stuck in all the crevices. I laid another piece of acetate under the frame, and sprinkled some glitter inside.

I added a stamped message to the front, along with some gift boxes to bring more balance to the front of the card, and then added a few red hearts for an added sprinkle of love!

There are more details in the video below – so please do check it out!

Don’t forget the chibitronics giveaway – only a few hours left to enter!

Have a wonderful New Years Eve, and I will be back tomorrow to announce the giveaway winner! Good Luck!

Hello my crafty friends!

Only a few more sleeps until Santa gets here, and before he arrives with a sack full of treats, I wanted to %image_alt%share another treat with you guys! Thats right, as a Christmas gift to all of you, we have an extra special video tutorial featuring my daughter Piper Oman, age 5!

It has become somewhat of a tradition for Piper to ‘help out’ and be featured in a HHC Christmas Special video – and this year, she was pretty much able to do most of it on her own. (Proud Mumma!) Scroll down to the bottom a link to one of her other videos that is on YouTube!

This year,  Piper is sharing how she (with a little help from her crafty Mummy) made these cute gift tags for her Teachers’ Christmas gifts! She uses dies to cut tags, banners and greeting words, and also demonstrates dry embossing using cuttlebug embossing folders. She uses the MISTI stamping tool to stamp and heat emboss a message – with help from Mum when it came to the hot work! And of course there is a few sing songs in there as well! LOL

To speed things along, she chose some pre-coloured stamped images that I had in my stash – ones that I had stamped and coloured with copics during a trip to Starbucks. That tends to be where I catch up on my colouring! Heehee!

I made sure there were enough santa hats and candy canes for each present, as I knew that she would want to give her chosen critters some accessories! She got such a kick out of putting the candy canes in the mouths of the critters! What a sweetie!

To finish the tag we added some jingle bells, a ribbon bow and a felt snowflake attached with a piece of bakers twine. On the back, she used the ‘To’ and ‘From’ stamp from Honey Bee Stamps Special Delivery set so she could then write a message on the back!

You can see another one of Piper’s videos here (when she was three years old)- Piper’s Santa Handprint Card.

Before we go into the details of the giveaway – lets take a look at todays tutorial! I will admit that today’s card is more advanced than the basic one-light cards such as the Fox Shaker Card and Lava You cards linked above. If you have mastered these cards, you could move onto the next level and  check out the Pick Up card which has multiple lights on one card. Today’s card however, is another step above, as it features a Slider Switch technique.

This card was inspired by these cute Christmas trees – a stamp that I have had in my stash for a while, and I thought they would look amazing with a little illumination! I wanted to recreate a twinkling effect, just like real fairy lights, and the SLIDER SWITCH is perfect to achieve this look! Here’s a quick peek!

To make the stamped panel of my card, I worked on some dark grey cardstock and used the MISTI tool to stamp and emboss the trees in black. Then I masked the trees with a little post it tape whilst inking up the background. I used distress inks to give a nice blended effect – and I must say that I was impressed by how much colour showed up against the dark grey cardstock. The reason I used a dark cardstock for a background was because I wanted to use some Artquest Stargazers paints. These have a gorgeous pearlescent sheen that really pops best against a dark colours. In the video you will get a better idea of how shiny and pearlescent these trees are – they’re gorgeous, when you move them under the light, and it is even more fun to reveal the LEDs! Here’s a closer look!

Once coloured, I used an old eyelet setting punch to make holes in the trees where my lights would go. I decided to mix up the colours for added fun, and also because my husband declares that all Christmas trees look better with coloured lights rather than just white ones! 🙂

I then traced the placement of the holes / LEDs onto a piece of cardstock which was my base, so I could lay out my circuit. This is the tricky part, but with a little practise you will soon get the hang of it I promise!

What makes this card different is the fact that the lights flash – or at least they appear to! Let me tell you what is really happening (it’s always fun to take a peek behind the curtain!)

Each of the lights are placed on a vertical strip of copper tape, and the top of each tape is connected to the negative side of the battery at the top left via a horizontal line of tape. Below each light, the bottom of each vertical strip of tape is left unattached, which means that the circuit is not complete. The positive side of the battery has a long piece of copper tape running vertically down the left edge of the card, which then runs along to the left, stuck to a piece of copy paper that I adhered on the side. This long bit of paper is then folded over the vertical strips  and stuck to the top of a few foam pads. The foam pads makes sure that the circuit isn’t always complete which would mean the lights are always on, and would drain the battery before long. You can then simply run your finger over the card – just a gentle pressure will be sufficient to connect the copper tape pieces – and as you draw your finger across the card different circuits will be completed and therefore different lights will illuminate, resulting in a fun flashing light effect!

Confused yet? That’s okay – because I have a video showing you exactly how I made the whole card!
