Card Making

Have you tried the Cuttlebug Schhmmoooooching technique yet? It’s lots of fun, but a little messy I must admit. But nothing a pack of baby wipes cant fix!

Basically you just apply ink to the inside of the cuttlebug embossing folder, on the side which has the text on it (which is usually the flatter side). You can rub the ink directly onto it, or use a brayer for a smoother finish. The result is an embossed piece of cardstock, but the non-embossed areas have got a hint of color! Its really really easy, and looks fabulous! So give it a try. And you should experiment with different inks too. I found that distress inks gave a splodgy result, but i loved the Adirondack dye ink pads.

Here’s two quick cards, using ‘butterscotch’ and ‘eggplant’ adirondack. Both are made using the same basic design but with slight differences: the colours, the embossed design, and the embellishment along the ribbon. Also on the purple one, i used a brayer but on the yellow one, I rubbed the ink pad in circles over the embossing folder, and you can almost see the swirly ink effect if you look closely. The photos aren’t great though I must admit – especially in contrast to how much impact they make in real life!

I had one more yellow image so i threw together this quick card. Really all i wanted to do was to play with a different stitch design on my sewing machine (but you can see i need a little more practice in parts!).

Terrifically Teal Cards

I’ve fallen in love with these teal papers from My Minds Eye Bloom & Grow collection.

But they were exactly what I was looking for when I was making a birthday card for my friend Sarah. With a birthday in January, I wanted to avoid Christmassy colours, but with snow lying on the ground outside, I wasn’t quite feeling in the mood to use spring colours or pastel shades. Well, thats my excuse anyway… nothing to do with the fact that teal is my favourite colour!!

A little matting & layering, a few buttons, pieces of string, a smidgen of distress ink (pine needles) and a butterfly rubber stamp from hero arts. Simple yet elegant! I hope she likes it.

Once I had cut into the 12×12 piece of cardstock, I couldn’t help but use it up. So here are the rest of the bits and pieces I made quickly whilst i had all the pieces of coordinating cardstock sitting on my workdesk.

First a teeny card, but this time I stamped the butterfly onto a page from an old french text book using brown Archival ink. I cut it out then mounted it onto a label shape cut using my nestabilities.

On this one I have repurposed a piece of cardstock that came with a Pink Paislee clear stamp. I liked the graph style print and knew that I would use it somewhere, so I put it away in my scraps pile. Now it has been given a new lease of life! :0)

And lastly…I really had fun with this one – working outside of the parameters of a ‘normal’ card. This is simply a card that slips in and out of its little pocket-home. The whole thing can slip inside a standard C6 envelope and a message or a photo can be put on the back of the card. FUN!

Ever want a card that is a little different? Well, this card is funky, fun and perfect for both boys, girls, ladies, men and kiddies too! I’ve called this one, ‘High Tide’ and it could be used for a birthday or even for a Bon Voyage card.

In the video, I walk you though how I made this card, and I use a number of my favourite card making techniques – masking, using distress inks, rubber stamping, adding a special touch with Perfect Pearls. I hope you enjoy the video and will give it a try yourself. (You can see the HD version on YouTube)

But before you watch the video, I think its time for something exciting…well, two things really.
